Today, we are setting the record straight.

About Trellis
Trellis is a third‑party legal database that may not update immediately. While its listing remains outdated, the official New Jersey court docket reflects the correct and final outcome.
Why the Lawsuit Was Filed
The matter arose from:
Similar organizational names
Miscommunication
Incorrect assumptions about our mission
It did not involve safety issues, harm, or misconduct. The claims did not meet the legal threshold to move forward.
Our Work Continues
The dismissal does not change our mission or operations. The Weequahic Park Sports Authority Conservancy continues to:
Maintain and beautify public spaces
Provide youth sports and educational programs
Support seniors, unhoused residents, and vulnerable families
Partner with schools, volunteers, local government, and law enforcement
Our focus remains service, community stability, and youth development.
WEYDA: Clarifying Public Misunderstandings
Our Youth Environmental Division — the Weequahic Park Environmental Authority / WEYDA — remains active and independent. It was created to:
Teach youth environmental and landscaping skills
Support seniors and residents with disabilities
Help young people build small service‑based businesses
Strengthen Newark neighborhoods through hands‑on work
WEYDA has not been found to interfere with any other organization.
A Message From Douglas Freeman
“For more than a decade, our volunteers and youth have logged over 100,000 hours of service in and around Weequahic Park. We’ve worked with local government and law enforcement to improve safety, remove illegal dumping, inspect equipment, and install lighting with to make the park more secure.
Seeing our work met with a lawsuit was disheartening, but it will not stop us. Our commitment to Newark’s families remains unchanged.”
