Blog Title: Fueling the Future: Weequahic Park Sports Authority Champions Healthier School Meals for Newark Youth
At the Weequahic Park Sports Authority Conservancy (WPSA), we believe that nourishing the body is essential to empowering the mind. That’s why we are proud to support the Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative, in partnership with the American Dairy Association and NFL FLAG, to help bring awareness to healthier school food choices for students in Newark and beyond.
With the support of Essex County Parks, WPSA took that commitment a step further by providing transportation and chaperones for four incredible student leaders from different Newark schools to attend a regional Fuel Up event at the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia, PA. These students didn’t just show up—they stepped up as youth advocates, representing the Newark Schools District and speaking out about the need for better, more nutritious meals in our public schools.
Each student had the unique opportunity to judge food samples, interact with wellness advocates, and share their perspectives on what school food should look and taste like in today’s classrooms. Their voices echoed the broader concerns of students throughout Newark who deserve meals that fuel academic performance, physical activity, and long-term wellness.
This mission aligns directly with WPSA’s long-standing efforts. For over 12 years, the Weequahic Park Sports Authority has served food to Newark youth as summer volunteers, ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals even when school is out. Our organization has stood at the front lines of food justice, advocating for healthier options, expanded access, and dignity in food service for all youth.
WPSA was honored to be part of this powerful moment of youth-led advocacy. These students are the future of our city—and their leadership is exactly what we need to keep pushing for systems that serve all children with care, health, and respect.
Fuel Up is not just about food. It’s about advocacy. It’s about equity. It’s about giving our youth the tools to lead. And as an organization rooted in service, WPSA is proud to stand beside them.
We thank Essex County Parks, the Newark Public Schools, our partners at NFL FLAG, and the American Dairy Association for countinuing to support the advocacy journey.. And most of all, we thank the youth who spoke truth to power.
Join us in our mission to empower youth, promote health, and build a stronger, healthier Newark.
