MR. Wadood's Contribution to Weequahic Park

Edward Wadood (1927–2022) had a profound and multi-faceted influence on Newark youth, primarily through his work with Weequahic Park and associated initiatives. His contributions combined park revitalization, youth mentorship, and sports-based character development.

1. Revitalization and Stewardship of Weequahic Park

  • Wadood aimed to elevate Weequahic Park to the same standards as parks in surrounding cities, ensuring safe, maintained, and welcoming recreational spaces for Newark residents, particularly youth.

  • He actively engaged in city and county governance processes, advocating at Newark City Hall and County Board meetings to secure resources, planning, and oversight, demonstrating political and civic leadership.

2. Youth Programs and Golf Initiatives

  • In 1984, Wadood co-founded the Newark Youth Golf Club, serving as Activities Director for approximately 16 years, from 1984 to 2000.

  • His vision recognized golf not merely as a sport, but as a developmental tool. He emphasized cultivating:

    • Integrity

    • Patience

    • Confidence

    • Self-esteem

  • These traits were explicitly intended to help youth develop personal and social competencies critical for success both in academics and life.

  • He was instrumental in bringing First Tee, a PGA-affiliated scholarship and youth development program, to the Weequahic Park Golf Course. This program provided scholarships and structured mentorship for thousands of youth, many from Newark, fostering opportunities in education, sports, and personal growth.

3. Broader Community Engagement

  • Beyond golf, Wadood’s mentorship extended to creating jobs, supporting college expenses, and guiding local youth, particularly men, through initiatives under the Brother Services insurance firm.

  • He contributed to programs that provided safe recreational spaces and educational empowerment, ensuring that young people grew up with positive role models in a supportive environment.

  • His legacy is commemorated within the park through a monument at the Weequahic Park Golf Club, recognizing his enduring impact.

4. Legacy and Enduring Impact

  • Wadood’s approach blended urban park stewardship with youth development, demonstrating that infrastructure improvements and structured programs can synergistically enhance community well-being.

  • He was dubbed the "Keeper of Newark's Weequahic Park" in acknowledgment of his tireless work for the park and youth, a title that reflects both respect and recognition of his long-term influence on Newark’s social fabric.
